RELIGIOUS VISA - VITEM VII
Who is eligible
- clergymen and missionaries with theological or academic religious education who intend to go to Brazil for religious purposes.
Requirements
- obtain from the religious institution the following documents:
• notarized copy of Act of Establishment of the Church in Brazil;
• notarized letter of invitation from the Church in Brazil, signed by its legal representative, assuring lodging and financial support for the intended party and members of his/her accompanying family, and assuming full responsibility for the departure of the clergyman and his/her family from Brazil;
• notarized letter from the Church in Japan attesting eligibility of the applicant, stating length of stay, place and type of work that will be performed in Brazil. The Consulate must legalize the signature of the notary public. ¥2.800 will be charged.
- from the applicant:
• two Visa Application Forms, filled out, dated and signed by the applicant;

• a passport valid for a minimum of (6) six months from the date of intended arrival in Brazil, with at least two blank pages available;
• 2 recent 5 x 7cm photos, front view, white background (snapshots and computer pictures are not accepted);
• notarized certificate of theological or academic religious education indicating assignments as clergyman, legalized by the Consulate. ¥2.800 will be charged;
• “Curriculum-Vitae”;
• police clearance issued within the last 3 months, certifying absence of criminal record. This document must be legalized by the Consulate. ¥2.800 will be charged;
• notarized and signed “statement of commitment” stating that the applicant will not engage in any activity within Indian areas without the proper FUNAI’s (National Indian Foundation) authorization. The Consulate must legalize the signature of the notary public. ¥2.800 will be charged;
• a copy of the Japan Alien Resident Card ( Gaikokujin Touroku-Shomei ) for foreign residents and/or a valid visa or document to return from Brazil to Japan or go to another country;
• copy of marriage certificate and birth certificate of dependents, if spouse accompanies applicant and/or dependent. This document must be legalized by the Consulate. ¥2.800 will be charged for each notarization;
• dependents under 18 years of age must have the original birth certificate or a notarized copy, and a notarized letter of consent, signed by both parents The Consulate must legalize the signature of the notary public in the letter of consent. ¥2.800 will be charged.
The Consulate may request additional information/documentation, as deemed necessary.
Consular fee
- ¥9.800 for the visa. Citizens from Belgium, Italy, Norway and Sweden are exempted from the visa fee;
- US passport holders must pay also a processing fee of ¥14.000 in reciprocity for an identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply for a Visa to the US;
- an additional absent fee of ¥1.400 will be charged for any application not submitted in person by the applicant or by his/her immediate family.
Note that:
- The Consulate General of Brazil in Tokyo does not process same day visas (no rush fee!). The processing time is up to 07 (seven) working days. Please plan accordingly!

- Religious Visas will be issued for a maximum of one year. though they may be extended in Brazil by the “Departamento de Polícia Marítima, Aeroportuária e de Fronteiras (DPMAF)”. Extensions must be requested at least 30 days prior to the expiration of the visa.
- visas are good for multiple entries, but they must be used within 90 days from the date of issue.
- If planned stay exceeds 90 days, visitors must register with the Federal Police in Brazil within 30 days after first arrival in the country. Together with passport, applicant must submit one of the original visa application forms which will be returned once the visa is issued;
- check vaccination for information about yellow fever.
- the legalization of documents issued in the United States must be done by a Notary Public within the jurisdiction of the Consulate.
